Actually they used to put a stripe across the family coat of arms to denote bastard lines. James Smithson of the smithsonian is a very good example.

Top right to bottom left, I believe. Sinister is from the French for “left”, which was thought to be evil, or unlucky (including left-handed people) which is where we got the word “sinister”, to mean ominous or evil. I have two left-handed siblings, and always enjoyed bringing this up in our younger days.
