Hi everyone, it’s a great afternoon her in the ATL. Of course we could use some more of that “liquid sunshine”. But not like what you folks had a year ago in Cobb County.
Well, the photos are missing from the gallery of confusion. It is always fun to do Happy Monday Dance! It brings great joy to those who go back to work on Mondays.
Hello Josh, Our liquid sunshine likes to stay right here. I don’t think it would make it all the way to you.
Sojo, how are you this Monday? I suppose you thave thunder storms to look forward to? (I hardly ever get to go play outside during thunderstorms.)(pouting)
I’ve seen snow and lightning–in Washington, DC, of all places. The thunder was muffled, and it was too cold for fog, but two out of three is rare enough (I counted the thunder and lightning together).
But, do you really want to be outside when there’s a chance of hail?
LuvH8 - Sun now, haven’t paid attention to the foecast yet but think we will get rain. Once on a solo backpack trip in late Sept. I got held up in Estes Park, CO on my way to Steamboat Springs. Couldn’t go west because they couldn’t get the pass open due to snow. After 3 days, and being sick, I decided to go into Rocky Mountain Nat. Park as I was only off a week. Only 7 other people in park and all on the other side so I was really by myself. I had my first camp spot at 10,500 ft. I had to eat a whole box of Peto-Bismo on the way up. It was snowing so hard visibility was less than 100 yds. and the trail was dissapearing. I was trying to travel light with no coat or tent. That night it snowed a lot, high wind, sleet, a lot of thunder and lightning. Due to my sickness I got snow in my bivwack sack, put on everything I had, my sleeping bag and all clothes were soaking wet and COLD. Needless to say it wasn’t a good night and wasn’t sure I’d make it. Obviously I did. Snow, sleet, cold, wind, lightning, being sick, night time, lack of protection and isolation is something not to look forward to.
@LuvH8: Nah, it’s one of those local little league community football teams me, and the other girls cheer for. Sorry, can’t tell you the team’s name. Internet privacy, you know.
Hi, tribe!Luv - I know some homeschooled cheerleaders. They cheer for the homeschool sports teams. If there are enough homeschoolers in an area, frequently they will join together to form teams to compete with other schools in sports. In KS, they can only compete against private schools in sports, the public school association won’t let them compete against them. My son was on a homeschool robotics team when he was in high school, and they compete against both public & private schools - and generally do quite well.
Sojo - Did you see we are up for more t-storms this week? My intellicast says Tuesday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday. (Emailed version had W, Th & F). Since they say isolated or scattered, guess we’ll have to wait to see what happens.
I was in Rocky Mountain National Park once in mid-summer and it was beautiful. Spectacular!! But I would never consider going there in the winter. Or spring or fall.
Sojo,
That sounds horrible and like you were lucky to survive. I am very glad you did though. Saved me the trouble of knocking down the tent. Also you make an excellent super hero.
You are supposed to have a nice warm house with hot cocoa or hot soup. Then you can run in and out. Hopefully with electricity. I hate when we lose electricity here. We have a water pump so we automaticaaly lose water too.
Frankr and LuvH8 - I wasn’t being stupid despite what it sounded like. I used to backpack there a lot and had experence doing it in the snow. I felt prepared for worst case conditions. Unfortunenately it turned out to be a worst case condition. Like other times I did learn some things from it and glad to of experienced it but wouldn’t want to do it again. The worst is knowing you can’t get help if you need it. :-)
Hi, FrankR & Luv!Luv - We have the same situation here. If we don’t have electricity, the pumps won’t run. During the winter, if an ice storm is predicted, I think about power outages. I was taken by surprise by the one Wednesday, so didn’t have a lot of extra water saved on hand for flushing toilets, etc.
We have been caught without back up water before too. Which reminds me I should renew our supply. I found if I put just a little bit of bleach in the water, it is usable for a really long time. Even if it smells yucky. Much better than water that is old without bleach.
Oh my gosh! I filled a glass of tap water from my mom’s house to swallow some pills and I almost spit it out. After so long with no chlorine it was just overwhelming.
I used to go in northern CO. along the divide next to Why. It was an area covering 200 sq. miles. If you got lost you only needed to follow steams downhill to get back to your car. That allowed you to go off trail using a map and compass to get around without having to worry about getting lost. I think there were seven trails going through the area. A lot of good fishing as most lakes had little use.
Luv - I tend to use plastic buckets that I buy our laundry detergent in at Sam’s. The water in those have just enough detergent that the water doesn’t get gross. We buy bottled (refill big 3 or 5 gallon jugs) water to drink, so we always have some decent tasting water on hand. So most of the water I fill up & save is for flushing toilets or washing hands (& dishes if the power’s off a long time).
Sojo, honestly I didn’t think you were being stupid. It is hard to predict getting sick and being absolutely prepared for every contigency. Things can go wrong no matter how prepared you are. Even for eagle Scouts.
Sojo - Neither my hubby nor I like fishing. But between driving across western KS without a/c in 100+ temps, high winds coming up suddenly in Pueblo, two worn out tires, swarms of mosquitoes, pit toilets, no showers or drinking water, colder night temps than we planned on, etc. we ended up coming home 3 days early.
Sojo - I’ve spent a fair amount of time near Divide, CO at the Golden Bell Ranch. Mostly during Christmas break, but at least once during summer. But I don’t mind with having heat, a/c, hot showers, etc. I’m just not into roughing it.
LuvH8 - LOL! That’s true, a twisted ankle can be diastorous when backpacking solo! Even though I was an Eagle Scout using a map and compase for traveling in the mountains is a real eye opener (before the days of cell phones and GPS). In my first snow travel I made at least four mistakes that I was lucky to survive.
Both my brothers are Eagle Scouts, I found out it is common for scouts to load other scouts packs with rocks here. Did your local troups do the same things?
I didn’t mean anyone thought I was being stupid, just thought it would be easy for someone to think I was. Too many people try to travel light on major expeditions and end up needing to be rescued. I was traveling light but had good equipment and experience. Played a gamble and lost on that trip.
LuvH8 - Not that but did do some pranks. Our troop had a lot of poor kids in it. We didn’t require full uniforms because most could not afford it. At one jamboree we went to all the other troops looked down on us due to bluejeans etc. In competition though we took first place in every event! Our leaders took a real intrest in us and knew what they were doing. Our troop was the first one in the nation to have five kids become Eagle Scouts at the same time, one of them was me!
We did a lot of things I don’t think other troops did. Sometimes on campouts we went without bringing any food, having to eat what we could find. We were well trained on what was good to eat and what not to try. (Too bad I didn’t remember all that as an adult.)
Nope! I refuse to eat slugs! I never once caught a fish with a pole. Although, if it wasn’t for those game wardens I would go fishing for pretend with just a weighted line occassionally. Before the crawdads disappeared from our river (family camping property) I used to enjoy ccatching them by hand. Traps take all the fun out of it.
Wolfie - Figures, I guess it IS Monday night! Had a horrible migraine this evening, took some major pain pills after calling my doctor, but now I’m feeling loopy. So I think I’ll call it a night.
I hope your team wins!

Before the crawdads disappeared from our river (family camping property) I used to enjoy ccatching them by hand. Traps take all the fun out of it.

Oh, glad neither of us meant an insult. (Though I do lots of stupid things. Shhh! It’s a secret.)

I’ve done more than my share of stupid things also.
