Those were the days. Saturday movies at the local “Boy’s Club” - cartons and the serial movie that went on for 16 weeks and always left the hero about to be crushed at the bottom of the mine shaft or carried over a cliff in a runaway wagon. Gene Autrey, Superman, The Shadow. We used to live for those Saturday movies. Too bad we can’t revisit those days (at least the good parts of them).
Way back in history when I was Calvin’s age, all the neighborhood kids went to the Saturday afternoon matinees. Thinking back on it, I’m pretty sure the parents used that time to reaquaint themselves without our interuptions.
Yea, but back when I went to the movies, if you misbehaved you were escorted out by the usher. No refund, just leave. Oh, and don’t forget The Lone Ranger!!
I loved going to the Saturday matinee marathons. My folks had enough sense to drop me off and then come and pick me up several hours later. The cost of a ticket was ten cents. I later remember how shocked I was when I went to see “Blow Up” as a teenager and had to pay a whopping fifty cents.
Not only did we go to the saturday movies by ourselves, we could ride the bus and visit the library and walk outside after dark and not be afraid of druggies and drive-by shootongs. The good old days.
yukoner- 5 cents when i went 68 years ago. funny thing what i remember the most was coming out of the theater at three in the afternoon and the sun was so bright at that time. haven’t gone to the movies in the afternoon since.
FROM YESTERDAY:
ROSE MICKEY says:that’s how we women feel about a bra. Must’ve been invented by a woman hater.
Actually, I don’t know about the woman hater part but itwas invented by a man and his name…get this, and no joke… was Arthur Tittsley. LOL I couldn’t believe it either.
I used to go to the movies with my 4 older brothers and sisters when I was a little girl. We would go to the movies dressed like we were going to church. We saw “beach” movies with Frankie and Annette and The Beatles movies. I also remember getting my eyes covered when the James Bond previews came on.
Does anyone wonder what Calvin did THIS TIME? That was my first thought. What did you do this time Calvin? Oh mom is soooo mad!
Some of you are really showing your age with your comments about the Saturday matinees and the cost. Wow those were the good old days. By the time I was a kid it was 50 cents so I’m not as old as some of you lol!
Doctortoon I love your new avatar! What a pretty kitty.
cgrl78, I wonder if that guy’s name is why one of the slang expressions for those things is the first half of his name?
I agree Wildmustang’s use of language has improved. His spelling is pretty good too. I’ve known a lot of deaf people and it’s hard for them to pronounce and spell words they’ve never heard.
I hate to think what my mom went through at showings of “Pokemon: The First Movie” and “Pokemon The Movie 2000”.
I still have my VHS copies of those movies. Now, if only I get could get a TV and VCR in my dorm room…
The first time I read this I was like 8 and thought it said “manatee.” And like all 8-year-olds, I had the attention span of a fruit fly. So I just accepted that the Calvin Clan went to see a manatee. And I didn’t understand what Calvin’s mum was so mad about.

How quaint to think there actually was a time when people didn’t have a DVD player in every room!
