Actually, Lifesavers are named because the whole in the center makes them impossible to choke on if swallowed whole.

When I was in third grade I had this joke: A kid is hanging on to the edge of a cliff with his right hand. With his left hand he slowly takes some lifesavers from his pocket. “Don’t fail now.” He says.
