For the nutrition unit I taught, I had the kids do a potluck. Got us all out of cafeteria food for a day, and for once, they paid attention to the lesson. . .
Continuing yesterday’s discussion – perceptor3 – yes, discipline is/was a big problem. The parents always jump to defend their kid, no matter what appalling thing they did in class, and even my first graders could do some pretty appalling things. It’s always the other kid’s fault, or MY fault because I’m not “controlling my classroom”! It’s never the fault of the misbehaving child or the parents who never said the word “no” to their kid. My parents wouldn’t let me get away with bad behavior either. If I got in trouble at school, I was in worse trouble at home. Of course, my dad was a teacher, too.
davemp – I didn’t mean to give the impression that I thought it was the teacher’s fault if the kids didn’t learn. Guess I should be clearer. The public/parents put all the blame on the teacher. After all, it’s our job to teach. They never stop to think that it’s the kids’ job to learn and the parents’ job to give them the tools to learn.

Teacher should know “everyone” is singular and needs a singular “his or her” not their.
