    “Gadzooks”! I haven’t thought of that word in years!

    You may already know, and I hope this is accurate. Years ago, I read that “gadzooks” was a corruption of “God’s hooks”, which referred to the nails used to nail Christ to the cross, and which was considered a curse word.

The use of Gad for God (cf. egad) is first attested 1590s. Among other similar phraseological combinations (all from 17c.) were gadsbobs, gadslid, and gadsniggers.
