I guess some people don’t realize that tax-exempt status was granted to churches in the United States in order to prevent lesser churches from being taxed out of existence, therefore creating a de facto violation of Freedom of Religion. In other nations it may simply have been in deference to the reigning monarch’s relationship with the clergy.

Of course they can tax em. Most just get granted tax exemption. But the Gov can deny such exemption whenever they see fit.
