Horse and cow stalls use straw bedding, so a manure fork is the proper tool; but manure forks are shorter and have a “D” handle to prevent twisting. These are now called “mulch forks”. The implement shown is a hay fork, which would soon rub the peasant’s hands raw under heavy manure loads. I fear that other cartoonists are much more experienced in manure handling.

“muck” is farmyard manure. A “mucker” is one who cleans it up.
He should tell the King to take this mucking job and shove it.
