Alice: Mommy, tell the story of how I rescued Polyfill. Mom: We were in a pet store. You were two years old.You found a stuffed rabbit on a shelf of doggy chew toys and stuffed it in your mouth and wouldn't let go. Daddy got embarrassed and said we'd buy it if you'd spit it out. Ten seconds later you tried to same trick on a rawhide bone. Daddy said, "No Way." Alice: And that's how I rescued you!

Why yes, Alice, you were quite the heroine…

I love that the bunny is named Polyfill - Dad probably read it off the washing-instructions tag, and it stuck.
And what were they doing in a pet store? Is there a pet in existence that wouldn’t make Petey even more neurotic?

All in good time Rayannina, all in good time…

LOVE two-year-old Alice’s angry eyes… she’s obviously mellowed since then!

you can tell a lot about people by their eyes, but not in alice’s case,

Whatever you say Alice. Yes dear!

I would think a turtle or maybe a hermit crab would be fitting for Petey…

Good call dad….a rescue story about some rawhide bone named “Gristly” just wouldn’t have been the same.

I recall that Polyfill’s name was Petey’s idea, not Dad’s.
(By the way, rereading Children at Play yesterday I observed that Petey is Peter Otterloop Jr.)

Hahaa… Love Alice’s expression in panel 2, not only the angry eyes but the tight little clenched fists! Oh, and a beautiful thing about panel 3. When people are trying to remember something, they frequently look up and to the side. This is depicted perfectly in panel 3 where Alice’s mom is looking up as she remembers the bygone memories of the rawhide bone stuffed in Alice’s mouth!

I just figured she was rolling her eyes at the memory. Even at two, Alice was Alice.

I’m not so sure that Alice’s mom’s eyes in panel 3 are meant to only mean that she is only remembering the event — I think it might also be that she’s like “I can’t believe that you acted like that!” and a bit exasperated in her memory of a 2 year old Alice!

I tried the same thing with a Bugatti. I put the door handle in my mouth and wouldn’t let go. The owner had to get in on the passenger side, but when he hit 60 in seconds, I was forced to let go.
