Elizabeth: The north star appears to be almost directly over the earth's northern axis. So, Ellen, if you are the turning earth, what do you see when you look north? Ellen: The rest of the ceiling goes 'round, but the star you put up there stays in the same place? Elizabeth: Yes!!!! So, the sailors could always find the north star, because it did not move! Then, by measuring its position... Students: Miss Patterson? What if it was cloudy? What if up is down? What if they were on the south side? What if the captain fell overboard? Person: How's the navigation project going, Liz? Elizabeth: I'm completely lost.
