For Better or For Worse by Lynn Johnston for August 19, 2008
Transcript:
Iris: He's been fine for so long, Phil. If anything, I thought he might have another stroke - but, it's his heart again. Phil: Iris, I can't leave you like this! Iris: Go to the wedding, dear. We'll be fine. I want to be here when Jim wakes up. He's going to recover. I'm sure of that. They're doing everything they can. So, don't worry. Have a wonderful time... and just carry on as if nothing happened.

…I love the way that Phil looks like his father and Robin looks like Micheal and so forth. I don’t want to see the inevitable happen but the circle of life will continue.

AS IF!
I just hope the wedding isn’t put off I’ve wanted Liz and Anthony together since they were kids. But Grampa is important to everyone… even me. (wipes away tears)

How many times have us longtime wellspouse caregivers, had to watch from afar as family goes on without us.

This brings back memories - thirty years ago my paternal grandmother was was transfered from the nursing home to the hospital with pneumonia days before my wedding. I was getting married 600 miles away from home.
My dad told me, “You may get a call from the hospital, but the show still goes on.” She recovered that time. My guess is that this isn’t where this storyline is going….

We watch it happen don’t we? I see my sweet wife able to do less and less. What can I do but treasure every day, every moment. It’s the little things I save, a laugh, a smile, the occasional twinkle. These, to store in my heart, where we cannot separate, where we are still young.

Breaks my heart but I know it’s a part of life. I hope he sees at least a picture of Elizabeth in her grandmother’s wedding dress before he’s gone.

Maybe they will have time to have the wedding & then visit Grampa afterwards. Elizabeth could leave her bouquet with Iris. So sad for them. As usual Lynn Johnston captures day to day life.

We still have to remember that Lynn promised that she wouldn’t kill anymore people in her strip. So there is still a chance he won’t die.

I’m very sad to hear that this strip is ending as we know it. I’ve been following for a long time (I’m 38). My mom would save them and send them to me at college. My mom passed away in 07 and this has been my connection with her everyday.

This comic will continue but also begin again with new art work. Sounds exciting. So the story will continue. :-)

ahb23 - The strip is going to continue, as Lynn has changed her mind about retiring. The sad thing is its because her husband left her for a twenty nine year old woman. Sad, but I’m glad she’s continuing the strip.

This has got to be the longest wedding in history. Are we there yet? Is there any there there?

I WOULD LIKE TO SAY TO YOU CONVERSES THEY MAY NOT BE REAL PEOPLE TO YOU BUT THEY ARE TO ME. MY MOTHER WAS A STROKE VICTIM AND EVERY TIME I SEE THE FAMLIY TAKING CARE OF JIM I WOULD THINK OF WHAT MY FAMILY DID TO TAKE CARE OF MY MOTHER WHO IS KNOW LONGER WITH ME , MY SISTERS AND MY BROTHER YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT ITS LIKE TO SEE SOMEONE WHO CANT TALK OUT LOUD AND CAN;T SAY WHAT IS ON HER MIND

whoa, whoa, whoa! back up there for a second! I was saying nothing about these cartoons not resembling things that happen in real life!!! I do not mean to make anyone who has dealt with a similar situation feel bad! I mean, Lynn Johnston’s characters that are in the strips, are just that, her characters that are in the strips. OK? Sorry if I hit a nerve there. That surely was not my intent. Specifically to you, Mary, I apologize.

Apparently, previous comments have been deleted in some of these strips, as some comments do not seem to flow with anything in the strip for that day or other comments.
