I’ve always thought Jon was a cartoonist though we never see him actually writing cartoons do we? Garfield would come in to interrupt him and say “Feed me.”

I know precisely how you feel, Jon … (PS: Thanks, Jim, for giving the fleas a miss).

That would be fine… for about 10 minutes. Then I remember all the things I have to do and I can’t just lay there doing nothing!

Jon is supposedly Jim Davis’ alter ego, which explains a lot…
In the very first Garfield strip (appeared 19 June 1978), the dialogue is as follows:
Panel 1 (Jon): “Hi! I’m Jon, a cartoonist, and this is my cat, Garfield.”
Panel 2 (Garfield): “I’m Garfield, and this is my cartoonist, Jon.”
Panel 3: (Jon): “We’re here to amuse you.” (Garfield): “Feed me.”

Comic strip characters don’t have to have a job….unless the cartoonist wants them to.
