Pocket history lesson, the original Dictators were Roman Republic officials nominated to take office in case of war or other emergency. They were the only Roman magistrates to have sole executive powers and not share with other officials in a balance of power, because in emergencies you needed to have one person giving the orders.
When Julius Caesar was declared Dictator-for-life, it was a complete shakeup of the old system, because previously Dictators only stayed in office for the duration of the emergency.
