Nate doesn’t exactly look like he has been filling up on berries and celery sticks. He has had a taste of something that used to walk around a barnyard. Why the change of heart now? What makes the turkey so special that it should be spared from being served with cranberry sauce and mashed potatoes?
If only Nate had this attitude during one of his famous “diets” where only swords can keep him from the fridge…
dreaded, Nate ALWAYS had that attitude toward turkeys, dogs, any animal. Go back and read a few years worth of strips, it’s a recurring theme. Nate has a heart of gold!
Heart of gold be darned…Thanksgiving is that traditional time to enjoy turkey, stuffing and all the fixings! Humankind are ominvores! I agree, this has been a completely recurrent theme in the strip (one of my prior concerns about freshness versus stale old themes), but it doesn’t justify pirating the tradionalist’s bird…he’ll just get another one anyway!
Nate ALWAYS had a big heart for his furry and feathered friends! He has been protective of them from way back when. His size has nothing to do with meat - he may have a gland problem as is the case in real life. So I would give him a ‘bear’ hug for his SOFT heart (if I can get my arms around him. LOL)
All I’m saying is that Nate doesn’t show the same level of kindness to chickens, cows and pigs, because he LOVES his barbecues, burgers, etc. I don’t see him raiding the fridge to wolf down any salads.
Dogs, cats, bunnies, squirrels, mice, fine, heart of gold, I’m not arguing. But turkeys are not cute…they are DELICIOUS! What’s he going to sit down and eat on Thursday? A bean sprout tofu roll…?

This has quickly become one of my favorite comic strips. Nate and Louie are my husband and his dog! :-)
