Hard to believe that such a messy kid would go on to become so endearing.

Pig-Pen surprised Charles Monroe Schulz because Sparky figured that he would get a score of jokes from Pig-Pen and then retire the character to the background where he would be seldom seen, but never heard, but the fans love Pig-Pen so much that Sparky kept doing strips featuring Pig-Pen with dialogue until the end.

Patty will not be very nice to Pig-Pen. neither will Violet Grey. Violet Grey will put down Pig-Pen for his dustiness despite her love of mudpies.

Second only to Snoopy as my all time favorite character! Ironic coming from someone named ‘Dusty’, eh?

This is the first appearance of Pigpen. Schulz wasn’t found of this character because he felt he was only good for gags related to dirtiness. The character was retired for several years in the late ’60s to mid ’70s. There were later storylines revolving around Pigpen include a date with Peppermint Patty and him running for class president.

It is revealed that Pigpen does not have a real name. Apparently, his father does not either because Pigpen later mentioned his father’s name was “Pigpen, Sr.”

When Pigpen appeared on TV, Mama would always go, “Yuck!” She never got the joke. Funniest TV gag was when Pigpen walked through a sandbox and all the sand flowed into his body, emptying the sandbox.

It’s sad though that he doesn’t have a real name and the way he expresses that.

But yay, like everyone else has said, first appearance and such a gentle entrance

“Pig-Pen”‘s first line "I haven’t got a name, people just call me things, real insulting things" is pretty much a reference to Piggy from the William Golding novel “Lord of the Flies”.
