Some still do. Its just news when the parents get sued for it. (To be fair, occasionally the parents do deserve it).
I still think spanking is frequently better than the psychological games some parents play.

I thank God for every time I was spanked! My parents have been gone for many years, but I still know how to behave!

While I don’t think spanking should be a first resort (except in a very few, very serious matters), I also don’t think it should be off the table. Some things require a serious response to teach quickly.
