One of the most poignantly bittersweet feelings a human can experience is that excited feeling of hope & expectation while waiting for something. I feel sorry for today’s youth, who will never know that breathless moment when opening the mailbox when awaiting a mailed letter or the pang of disappointment when it isn’t there (making the next day’s trip to the mailbox even more intense). With the current instant gratification culture, the sweetness of anticipation is lost. And how often has the anticipation been greater than the actual thing (a gift, a lover, a new job)turned out to be?
