To Marshal Griffith; Nabuquduriuzhur; mighaswellbe -: Was drafted into a 114th Engr Combat Battalion from the Mississippi Natinal Guard that was activated in September 1950. A group of us from Michigan was drafted in Dec 1950. They told us they took the day off the first time it snowed.
Being a cook II would not kniow a Bailey bridge from a Pontoon bridge.
Did we eat better than the Navy? I don’t know. Sometimes we would get what was supposed to be frozen loaf of steaks that would only feed about a half of our company and the mess sargent said we will make stew ouit of it to make it go around.
Being in the dairy state we were lucky if everyone got one carton portion of the small milk cartons. While in Ft. Riley Kansas however we had a 50% over supply of milk so 2nds were welcomed.
Two cold winters in McCoy and a hot summer in Kansas. The army life gave me the idea to move to Arizona in 1985 where it is only cold for a month of two if you consiider 35 -40 as being cold for the old blood
To the AuldWan , you suffered much pain as a POW and I am grateful for your service to our country..

I thought I had the best deal of all. no guard duty or KP.
Hillbillyman over 13 years ago
Guard duty and KP was my forte in the army. Not to mention police call and grease pit cleaning.
