Funny how we used to stand on lines waiting to use those things! They would still be useful even with the modern cellphone because they did a good job with shielding you from outside noise. And, of course, what if there was no place to change into your red and blue long johns?

You beat me to it, Lewreader. That was always a habit for anyone using a phone booth. Are there any of them around anymore? We have a payphone at a gas station near my house.

at least you could find a payphone… If you do not have a cellphone, even at a hospital, you are just out of luck if you are in San Antonio area.

They still have them in Europe - or did a few years ago. And there is one in Metropolis, Illinois, within sight of the Superman statue.

Right under that is one of those bikes with a banana seat and a gas attendant who cleans your windshield wiper and checks your oil.

Even though it’s not red, it made me think of Dr. Who

I worked for old Ma Bell for years, and pay phones were a big money maker, believe me - everyone used them. When the Bell System was broken up, a lot of people bought into the private pay phone business, figuring they couldn’t lose, and at first they made money. Of course, Ma Bell could afford phone booths all across America - your phone bill paid for them. Joe Blow couldn’t pay for those fancy things, though. Then came cell phones, and we all know what happened to the pay phone business - those who invested are probably under that booth in the cartoon.
