In The original song, coined by the British to make fun of American rebels, macaroni is British slang for fancy, high class decoration. It probably was an insult aimed towards high position rebel commanders, who had no obvious distinctions besides a feather in a tri-point hat, the common hat of the day for gentleman, and some shoulder brass. British generals, however, had different uniforms, broad hats and medals.

For those that don’t know, the lyrics are: Yankee Doodle went to town, A-Riding on a pony; He stuck a feather in his hat, And called it macaroni.
