They’ve probably been monitoring our 24-hour news stations and figure there’s no point in coming here - it’s just the same thing happening over and over and over…….If they would change the bleeep film clips they might be convinced otherwise.

Dirt farmers are meeting (and getting probed by) them everyday. Don’t you watch daytime TV?

If they’re watching Lucy broodcasts, they’ll know there’s no intelligent life here for sure.

Bob Wells: If you read the Calvin and Hobbes strip from yesterday (Aug. 29) you will see there are readers from all over the world here - Ukraine, Switzerland, India, Belgium, etc., NOT just the USA. Possibly some spelling errors are made by people for whom English is not a first language. We don’t really know, do we, so it’s a little rude to point them out.

rude, yes. helping them learn? possibly, but i wouldn’t take it upon myself to teach in that manner. others aren’t so hesitant.

Ushindi, if one can’t speak, spell or read English DON’T POST. I don’t post in French and I wouldn’t mind being corrected if I did.

Ash: I would have to ask you “why”? Is there a rule here at GoComics of which I’m unaware, regarding correct spelling only, or are you taking it upon yourself to decide the posting rules? If you own GC, then I guess you certainly have the right, but otherwise, I don’t think your prejudices regarding spelling actually count. As far as I know, anyone can post regardless of spelling ability in English.

@Ushindi and Ash: Probably no one would be raising this spectre at all if the apparent average ability (or willingness) of U.S. citizens to spell correctly wasn’t going downhill fast. Some find this alarming, and at the end of the day, I don’t blame them.

Of course, that still doesn’t mean there’s a rule enforcing Standard American English here. We don’t know where everyone’s from or what everyone has to deal with. This is one of those cases where we’d do best to judge ourselves rather than others. I’m as picky as I know how to be with my own spelling and grammar, and then try to set a good example thereby.

@fesarlazasoto: Sure, you can post in Castillian if you like, but not every norteamericano here can puzzle out Spanish with the aid of some knowledge of Latin roots! :)
