I take this cartoon as being a riff on all those stories about stone carvers finding the one glorious shape that can be carved from a stone, in the face of a request for something different. This is often told as an “Asian fable” of some kind, where a ruler calls for jade to be made into a crown, and instead the carver can only find fish, etc. Here there’s no princess, there’s just a pea. :D

I started to woodcarve a totem pole and wound up with the perfect toothpick.
