Now Fred, you must learn to share with your friends.

Also a reference to a series of Readers Digest articles by Arthur Milward (a Brit), whose son Adrian was treated (unsuccessfully) for Leukemia–specifically one article “Concert For Elisabeth”. In that article Milward mentions that during his oft visits to the paediatric cancer ward, he had conversations “not only with Adrian; companions in distress, the children shared even their parents”.

Maybe Fred’s worried that his owners may decide they want a second dog.

A little bit of trivia: the “real” Fred Bassett (i.e. one human who went by the name) was a 1920’s crook and one-time partner of Willie Sutton (who revolutionized the bank-robbing industry with his ingenious approach using disguise and illusion). Not that that has anything to do with today’s strip, I just thought you all might like to know (knowing your deep and unquenchable thirst for obscure bits of trivia)
