The Canadian money part was probably much funnier in years past when a Canadian Dollar was worth far less than an American Dollar (back in 2000-2002 a Canadian Dollar would only get you about 65-70 US cents).

Try spending Canadian money in the United States. That’s what makes it funny/ironic.
