Jim threw a wicked curveball when Bird vanished before Gertie could accept his proposal. I wonder what will happen now that Gertie wants to pick up where they left off– does she think that offer is still open, and is it?
I have a funny feeling…and I HOPE I’m wrong. When Earl does show up, Walt is going to take a turn for the worse. Then it will be a toss up between Byrd or Walt for Gertie.
Whatever the outcome, I wish a little more time had been put into establishing Gertie and Earl…she seemed to turn him aside because he didn’t have money, which would be kind of shallow. One difference between Scancarelli’s writing and Dick Moore’s is that Scancarelli tends to favor punchlines over characterization and plot advancement. Moore’s strips rarely seemed to have “punchlines” in the traditional sense, just nice moments of characters bouncing off each other and a better overall sense of flow.
A long-standing rule in TV writing has always been that - if you want to introduce a new character - you should include the new character in a LOT of scenes with characters who have already been established.
It would be nice if Comic strip writers discovered that particular rule. The stories for Earl and Upton would have been a LOT more interesting if Earl and Upton had spent more time interacting with established strip characters.

I agree with your point, Deborah. It would have been a plus, but I wonder if space (3 panels) is the determining factor. I enjoyed these stories despite the paucity of cameos by old characters.

No argument, but a love story involving a Wallet family member would be nice. Also, this is a back-to-back-to-back series of non-Wallet stories. Too much.

Gweedo Murray said Gertie the gold digger. ————————————————- Indeed! When Byrd didn’t have a dime, she didn’t have the time. Talk about low class!
