Bill Handel was born in Brazil, and although he moved to the US at a young age, he still doesn’t quite speak English like a native. My favorite is when he says, “You’re out to lunch,” whe he means, “You’re out of luck.”

I’m quite fond of saying “We’ll cross those chickens when the milk spills”.

It gets a strange look from non-native speakers of English, but native English speakers get it – and grin.

“Killing two rats with one stick” doesn’t sound mangled, it sounds like a translation from another language’s idiom. It makes as much sense as “Killing two birds with one stone.”
