    Teens in honor programs like IB (international baccalaureate) are required to do a certain number of community service hours. Fortunately, few of the kids if any are like this.

    Also, it’s Donna who’s assuming the girl is a volunteer, and the response “It’s a graduation requirement” can be read as a correction. But, if the requirement is, as Wyntre suggests, along the lines of “Community Service” and the girl CHOSE the homeless shelter as opposed to, say, cleaning up the beach or groundskeepeing at a park (or somesuch), her participation my still be, in a sense, “voluntary.” (Maybe she thinks of herself as a “people person”.)

    It’s nice to see Donna find someone to whom she can relate on her own level: a 16-year-old Valley Girl doing required volunteerism towards high school graduation! —Such a change from interacting with Mona all day long!
