Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson for January 19, 1986
Transcript:
Calvin: It says here that "Religion is the opiate of the masses." What do you suppose that means? TV: It means that Karl Marx hadn't seen anything yet. Hobbes: What are you watching? Calvin: Garbage. This show would insult a 6-year-old! And I should know. Hobbes: So why watch it? Calvin: All the other shows are even worse! Hobbes: Why watch TV at all then? Calvin: There's nothing to do. Hobbes: Nothing to do?! You could read a book! Or write a letter! Or take a walk! When you're old, you'll wish you had more than memories of this tripe to look back on. Calvin: Undoubtedly.

What’s worse is he could be 40 and spending countless hours on the Internet reading a comic strip from two decades ago, which ironically bring back memories from childhood…

Oh God, Stewie! If only you knew. I’m 62, and spending countless hours on the internet reading a comic strip from two decades ago, which ironically brings back memories from my young adulthood, which remind me of memories from my childhood! Which…….nevermind………HAHAHAHA! That’s it, I’m certifiable!

Sure, Karl Marx hadn’t seen anything yet–he was gone before his favorite shows came on the air. Instead he had to hang out at a local museum.

So much for Hobbes’ speech.

Calvin could do a whole lot more, if Hobbes wasn’t so weak-willed.

I’d like to know how a 6-year-old American kid in the mid-80s managed to get his hands on a book that directly quotes Karl Marx. XD

I remember this one in the paper as a kid. I didn’t know who Marx was, and Hobbes’ list seemed long.
