Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson for June 09, 1987
Transcript:
Calvin: Here's a little town. Hobbes: Here's a steamshovel scooping out a giant hole. Calvin: Here comes the bulldozer pushing thousands of barrels of toxic nuclear waste into the giant hole. Over the years, these dangerous poisons seep into underground waterways. The cancer rate of the nearby little town triples. Hobbes: If you want me, I'll be under the bed.

The little town would have been safe, if it wasn’t for that bulldozer.

If the free-market decides cancer rates must triple, triple they must.

Our “free market” doesn’t meet the basic tenets that economists argue must be present in an ideal market – perfect information and mitigation of negative externalities. Companies that pollute pass their costs on to others, and consumers generally are unaware of companies’ records on issues such as pollution. Companies that do harm also tend to be very good at covering their tracks and at denying a correlation if, say, they dump toxic waste and the cancer rate triples. Calvin’s fantasy is all too realistic.

Is there room for one more?
bmonk over 12 years ago
Yep. It’s too easy to abandon junk and toxic wastes, and leave it to someone else to worry about. If they even know about the problem.
