Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson for July 21, 1988
Transcript:
Calvin: What do you think of the zoo? Hobbes: I think it's kind of depressing. I always feel sorry for the animals. They don't have much room to move, or anything to do. They just sleep until they're fed. Calvin: That's pretty much all you do. Hobbes: You know what I mean.

It’s always bugged me how Watterson seems to have a negative view of zoos. They’ve helped preserve natural habitats and prevented species from going extinct.

As Hobbes remarked in another strip, “if people could put rainbows in zoos, they’s do it”. And what exactly gives us the right to lock up an animal that roams over 30 square miles in nature for our amusement? Because we’re destroying so much of their habitat they may become extinct?

Plenty of house pets just sleep until they’re fed, too.
