Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson for August 29, 1989
Transcript:
Hobbes: How are we going to invent a robot? We don't know anything about machines. Calvin: Maybe you don't. It's easy. There are just four simple machines to alter force: The lever, the pulley, the inclined plane and, um, the internal combustion engine. Take my word for it, I'm an expert at inventions. Hobbes: So where do we start? Calvin: We ask mom for a research grant.

It’s said that necessity is the mother of invention. Calvin said that his mother is necessary for this invention.

Lever, inclined plane, wedge, screw, wheel-and-axle, and pulley-and-line. I see the inclined plane as inherent in the wedge (inclined plane moved used to split) and the screw (wraped in a helix), while the wheel and pulley are similar to the lever.
Also, why is the hammer not included? Is it too hard to figure out the mechanical advantage of converting kinetic energy into force?
