Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson for September 01, 1989
Transcript:
Calvin: Hey, Dad, I'm inventing a robot. Can you get me a patent? Dad: You invented a robot? Calvin: Well, here it is so far. Hobbes and I have been working on it all afternoon. It's not quite perfected yet, but you get the idea. Dad: Hmm...what does it do? Calvin: That's the problem. We haven't figured out how to make it do what we want. Dad: Don't get discouraged, your mom and I got the same results after working on you for six year. Calvin: Har har. My attourney is a comedian.

Calvin could transmogrify his creation into the robot he’s looking for. Or maybe steal one from the future.

It’s pretty neat rereading this strip with the background knowledge that Calvin’s dad actually IS a patent attorney just like Bill Watterson’s own father
