Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson for September 10, 1990
Transcript:
Calvin: Help me with this homework, ok? What's 6 + 3? Hobbes: 6 +3, eh? Well, this one is a bit tricky. First we call the answer "Y", as in "Y do we care?" Now Y may be a square number, so we'll draw a square and make this side 6 and that side 3. Then we'll measure the diagonal. Calvin: I don't remember the teacher explaining it like this. Hobbes: She probably doesn't know higher math. When you deal with high numbers, you need higher math. Calvin: But this diagonal is just a little under two. Hobbes: Ok. Here, I'll draw a bigger square.

sometimes my tutoring sessions feel like this.

Honestly, why can’t they just teach him it in a way he’ll pay attention to? You have six comics in your hands. Here’s three more. Count how many comics you have now. So on and so forth. He just has to see it physically in a way that’s fun.

Didn’t this happen in an older strip?

Who knew basic addition could be so complicated?

Call the answer “Y,” as in “Y do we care?”

I tried this once, but I used a ruler and measured out 6 inches on one side and 3 on the other. The diagonal measured 6.75. Next, I tried dividing both numbers by 2 (since the opposite side would make the full number.) So I measured out 3 inches on one side and 1.5 on the other. The diagonal measured 3.7 – which is actually close to 6 MINUS 3!

I like this idea of “new” math!

Y really is a square number! Hobbes did some math right for once!

Hobbes’ higher math would make complete sense to a high-er person.

I feel the same way when people talk about common core math.
