My dad had one of an American flag on his forearm that he got while in the Army . . . until, just like with this guy, it got to the point where it was an ugly, blotchy mess and you couldn’t tell what it was — or rather, what it used to be. I think he came to regret it later on too.
As Penn Jillette wrote, it’s a better idea to get a primary or secondary sexual characteristic pierced — it’s less expensive, often safer, much more hip, and if you get tired of it you can just lose the metal and wait for the hole to heal over; but with a tattoo, unless you’re as rich as Johnny Depp you’ll spend the rest of your life wearing long sleeves or putting bandages over the name “Winona” on your arm.
My friend’s father (an old Navy guy) had a faded, fuzzy image of a sailor swabbing the deck of a ship with the words “Never Again” in a banner under it.

There is a tattoo-removal cream called “Wrecking Balm” that fades out tats over time. It’s available online.
