@ Runar. Good catch! At first I didn’t think the joke veryfunny. After a second, I realized that the writer probablymeant 100 “back yards”, not 3 feet = 1 yard. In that case,a yard is as good as a mile, especially to a bird.

100 back yards don’t add up to much around this neck of the woods. If I can walk it, the birds certainly can fly it.
