In the supermarket, hamburgers are generally cheaper than veggie burgers. But the overall cost of hamburger exceeds that of veggie burgers, once you factor in grain subsidies, the environmental damage to properties around the feedlots and within the water table of the feedlots, long-term health issues for the consumer (if one’s overall diet is high in saturated fat), and the gas emissions from cows that are fed an unnatural diet. Our economic system by no means meets the qualifications of a “perfect market” – what you pay at the store rarely is a true reflection of the full costs of an item.
