Big Nate by Lincoln Peirce for August 20, 2011
Transcript:
Success! We now own a vintage Captain Voltage figuring! What an investment! So now what do we do? We take it down to Klassic Komix and sell it! For a hundred smackers! Then we just sit back and live off our profits! Live off $45 each? No, no, we use the $45 to buy stock!

They spent $10 to get the figurine, so their profit if they sell it for $100, would be $90, divided two ways is $45. (But that’s unlikely if they try to sell it to a store, a store sells retail, they would be selling wholesale, if the store hopes to sell something for $100, they are unlikely to pay more than a fraction of that, maybe LESS than $10, because the person they buy it from gets their money right away but the store is buying it on speculation and it immediately becomes unsold inventory and a debit in their financial statement until somebody finally buys it. I suspect that this is a lesson that Nate and Francis are going to learn very shortly.)

If Francis put up the whole $10, then technically the figure belongs to him.

It would be scary if Nate would explain that to Larry King.

Suzanne, it won’t be tomorrow, because Sunday strips generally don’t advance continuity. But clearly the resolution will be what Lincoln decides it will be, not what we decide it will be. I suspect, however, that whether they turn a profit or no, if Francis finds the split satisfactory then Nate will feel ill-used, and if Nate finds it satisfactory then Francis will feel ill-used.
If it were Artur who’d given Nate the $10, I could see it going like this: They sell the figure for $50, but the Komix store immediately puts a $100 price-tag on it. Nate feels cheated. Nate gives Artur $25, and Artur returns to the rummage sale and gives the man who sold it to them $15 more, further infuriating Nate. Artur thens ask “Whyfor are you angry? I have back my $10. Nothing I gained, and nothing I lost, since nothing I did. Also besides, if Klassic Komix cheated us, then we also have cheated Rummage-Sale Man, and I do not want to be a cheat.” Nate has turned a quick $25, but still feels like he lost out, and his last panel is his usual slow-burn “I can’t stand Artur…”

I’m betting the comic book guy won’t take it because it’s not in its original packaging. Collectors are funny that way.
