@HectorPriamIn 1948 the races were totally segregated. It wasn’t just schools, but every aspect of society. The white race was the standard of morality, what every other race presumably aspired to. Saying something was “white of you” was a compliment, and wasn’t even considered insensitive. It’s like today saying a restaurant is “exclusive.” What does that mean? It used to mean that only the “right” people were allowed in and all others, of the wrong race, religion, etc, were excluded. Today it just means a good restaurant, with its original meaning forgotten.

It would be today! But this strip was 1948 and meanings change. Gay had a much different meaning then, etc.
