I had lots of switchings (with a balloon stick that left welts). My parents would not have been able to do that now. I used a wide leather belt once or twice on my 4 kids in order to keep control (back in the 60s) but tried usually to just use the belt slapped on the formica kitchen table as a warning. Today’s kids are now often out of control – or you hear stories of totally outlandish abuse. Society in general has lost the idea of common sense and lawyers just want that to continue!

It’s not like you had to walk the plank or anything, James.
