Pearls Before Swine by Stephan Pastis for September 08, 2002
Transcript:
Did you know you can tell how long a couple has been together by how they act with each other?" "No. I didn't." "It's true. For example, those two over there are newly-weds...See how they're listening to each other and laughing and touching a lot..." "And those two over there have been married about a year...You can tell by how they're still talking to each other." "Now that couple's been together five years. They're fighting because they remember the better times and still think they can get them back." "And that couple there has been together ten years. They no longer even fight because that would involve some sort of interaction, which by now, they avoid entirely." "Oh, and then there's that couple by the window...They've been together fifty years." "Couple? I just see some guy eating by himself." "That's right."

I hate how Stephan tries to promote the idea that no one can be happily in a relationship. My parents still love each other, even though they disagree because nothing is perfect.

Mr. Pastis is correct. Happy marriages are the outlier.

As always, Mr. Pastis has a nigh supernatural grasp on the truth.

Mr. Pastis, just because you had a bad marriage doesn’t mean everyone does. That would be like if I said all republicans are jerks who will rudely insult your family when you say your voting democrat.
