CF lightbulbs are expensive, do not last anywhere near as long as the manufacturers claim that they do and contain mercury, which makes their disposal hazardous waste. It may cut down on energy usage in the short term but will be a huge problem in the long term. NEXT!

I have an old CF that has lasted over 15 years. It wasn’t lit all that time, but survived many household moves. It flickers before it fully lights. :-) Computer monitors and laptops also contain dangerous metals, which is why they have to be disposed of safely. However, LED bulbs are the next great thing, apparently – no mercury, low energy use, and they DO last a long time.Progress, not perfection…

Hey I know one “pretender” to the throne who is loving this week’s strips…Georg of Prussia. The Kaiser’s Great Great Grandson is openly calling for a return of the Hohenzollerns to power in Germany.

CFL’s contain mercury vapor, which goes to your brain and is very bad to let loose in an enclosed space like a room in your house. Don’t break them, don’t let them overheat and explode from inadequate ventilation. The solid chunks of mercury amalgam that they stick in your tooth cavities aren’t the best thing either. Every wonder why doctors almost never test for mercury and other heavy metals? LEDs are awesome though, or will be at least.

I bought some CFLs but currently use just one in the light of front stoop (need an 8’ ladder on a tiny stoop to change bulb- also is outdoors so no danger of murcury in the house). Most lights I use are on dimmers and bulbs I bought are not compatible and I retire shortly after dark.

There are incandescent bulbs still burning that Edison built. Failure is a really lucrative option!
