Big Nate by Lincoln Peirce for August 21, 2011
Transcript:
Teddy says, "Hey, Chuckles! Why the long face?" Nate groans, "Hmmph." Teddy says, "Hmmph what?" Nate says, "Read this quote." Teddy reads, "'A cartoonist needs to be a good artist, not a great artist, and a good writer, not a great writer.'" Teddy says, "Okay, so?" Nate says, "So... I want to be a cartoonist!" Nate says, "...But I'm a great artist! And a great writer!" Nate says, "I'm overqualified." Teddy says, "Right." Nate says, "Now I'll have to settle for being president or something!"

I think the point is that a great cartoonist needs only be a good artist and a good writer. A great artist won’t make a cartoonist if he’s not at least a good writer, and a great writer won’t make a cartoonist if he’s not at least a good artist. The bar for each skill is set pretty low in cartooning, but it’s the combination that’s key.
For instance, Vincent van Gogh was a great artist (even better than Bill Watterson), but he couldn’t write a talking-dog joke to save his life. And James Joyce’s stick-figure “Ulysses” graphic novel was just embarrassing.

“The quote comes from Charles Schulz, who was always very modest about his skills as a writer AND an artist.”
I might have recognized the source. However, from what I’ve read (second-hand, of course; I never met him personally, whereas you certainly might have) is that, while Schulz never felt cartooning was a particularly worthwhile art form, he was nonetheless very meticulous and very proud (and protective) of his achievements in it. It’s true that Schulz would never be Andrew Wyeth or Scott Fitzgerald, but on their best days Scott Fitzgerald and Andrew Wyeth couldn’t have teamed up to produce “Peanuts.”
The way I look at it is that cartooning calls for a very particular sort of art and writing (and I fully agree that good writing can salvage poor art better than good art can salvage poor writing). A great cartoonist is one who produces great cartoons.

I’ve been thinking about this comic for a while and the quote it mentioned. Does this mean that Bill Watterson is overqualified?
