    Pernickety ā€“ British, first used around 1800. Persnickety ā€“ American, first used around 1900. We almost speak the same language.

    I watched a TV program that featured

    JRR Tolkien the other night .Tolkien was Oxford trained

    and, we know he had a pretty good grasp of the English

    language from his books. He spoke at length about

    how the ā€œHobbitā€ and the trilogy ā€œLord Of The Ringsā€ came

    to be. After 5 minutes I switched channels .I couldnā€™t

    understand a word he said.
