I think the snakes and guns are bird bath decoys, not decor — but either way, they’d scare the birds, not lure them, so…?

Loose bulb Burl is buying dead annuals….

He can stick them in the ground and pretend he had a garden, but it died.

Means he can skip the special soil, the watering, feeding, and weeding….and actually save WAY more than 70%

And I’m one of them there oldsters, I guess — but I never called layaway anything else that I can remember.

Well, English friends used to call it lay-by.

There are and were various terms for taking things home and then paying for them, as we now do with credit cards.

I remember when stores had to have their own versions:

credit accounts, installment plans, time payment plans, hire purchase —

but none of those involved the items staying in the back room of the shop till paid for.

I give.

An aside: Years ago, when I had a vintage clothing store, a cruel thief stole everything on our layaway rack.

We had to give the customers their money back, and some had already put down 80 or 90%.

I know it’s not true mathematically but it sure feels like a double whammy to lose the merchandise PLUS have to pay 90% of retail for it.

Well, I tried to sleep. but I can’t. When I was real little (eons ago) I remember a department called “Will Call”. When I asked what that was, I was told you could put things in there and pay on time, then pick them up when finished paying. Much later they dropped the term “Will Call” and started using “Layaway”will call

the department, as of a large store, at which articles are held to be picked up, as when paid for

I thought “Will Call” was where you paid for something and had to go to the shipping dock to pick it up.

In garden stores you should know when things have to be planted. Now would not be a good time in IL, except for indoor plants. And in the larger chains there are often dead (or nearly so) plants mixed in a flat. I did not realize Burl had bought some of those dead annuals- had my mind on the gazing ball that Rose bought.

Try I bought it on the installment plan.I also have bought stuff at the "jot um (it) down store.

I like Joy’s new fall- color blouse….. But the pinkish/purple purse….? ?…… She should plant that….. in the garden………

I have heard “lay away” and “installment plan”; also “hope chest” which a local department store used to lure young women into buying china and silver before marriage. But when I lived in the UK, SusanSunshine, a lay-by was a pullout lane on the road, often used by people in need of a short nap.

I need a two-foot hose for my dehumidifier. Now I could get a 20-ft. hose here for $10, or spend $20 on gas for a roundtrip to Crustwood. What would Burl do?

I’d like to buy some of your nothing, please. Wait that’s what I practically get at the Grocery store now.-——-Charge IT!

I remember when you just went in a store, selected items, and paid for them with cash.

Hmmm…. annuals are usually pretty reasonable (just a couple of bucks), and 70% off means the one little pack they have on the counter would be less than a dollar, and they’re putting it on a credit card? And which card isn’t maxed out Joy?

2’ hoses are useful…ask any landscaper…well maybe not ANY landscaper, but for some of us they come in handy…sometimes you don’t need the hassle of a 50’ hose just to fill a watering can or a 1 gallon sprayer at the faucet

talddren – I agree…. The shortest I could fine at Mernads….. was the 10 ft washer/dryer one……….. Had to “build” one myself…………..
