On 8/15/11, until around 11AM CDT US, that day’s strip was in color on GoComics. Not only that, earlier that day the complete, as far as I could tell looking at random dates back to 2004, GoComics archive was in color. Then all of a sudden they all became black and white again. Thank you for reminding me of another reason I think MT is a total hypocrite on this issue.
I still think this week is awesome so far… that last panel shows the attitude of the general public all too well. —forget those who love it, lets just make it all new so the cracks who add every new film to their personal library will have something to buy….. yeah…. right….
Did you ever read Ayn Rand’s The Fountainhead? Among other things, it deals with the argument over who “owns” a work of art, the artist or the public. You may disagree with Rand’s politics and world-view (as do I), but the argument is worth exploring.
Don’t fall into the common error of ascribing a fictional character’s opinions to his author. Whatever Mark Tatulli may feel about the issue, all we know for sure is that Dean is outraged, and it’s perfectly in character for him to be so.
My DVD of Disney’s “Beauty & The Beast” gives me the choice between the original release and the more recent “Special Edition” with an additional song and a couple new scenes (the sequence was cut from the first theatrical release, but the song was included in the stage show and proved popular enough to be “restored” to the film). I’ll only watch the original version, not because the song is lackluster (it is, but inoffensive in itself), but because there’s a new sequence of Belle teaching Beast to READ!
I refuse to believe that, enchanted or no, a prince wouldn’t have been taught to read. Besides, if Beast couldn’t read, then he wouldn’t have understood how much it meant to Belle to be given access to the library (which he CLEARLY does, in the scene where he surprises her with it).
However, the scene exists, whether I watch it or not, so I’ve developed my own little coping scenario. The book from which Belle is giving her reading lessons is “Romeo and Juliet,” using Shakespeare’s original text. Since they’re in France, I’m perfectly willing to believe that they’re really all speaking French to one another, and the use of Shakespeare’s verse indicates that Belle is teaching the Beast English. Problem solved (to my own satisfaction, anyway).
If George Lucas were Orson Welles, he would have gone back to scene in “Citizen Kane” of Kane’s childhood (less than halfway through the movie) and given us a tight closeup of young Kane’s sled. THAT’S how much of a spoiler Lucas is.

Here’s a one-liner for Dean:.“Fan fiction is supposed to be done by fans, not the director!”

Maybe, if Dean got Lio to help him, he could put a stop to the madness.
