Well remember Burroughs was writing his story in 1914 when the expectation of gorillas and other great apes was that they were slavering bloodthirsty brutes. Plus, at heart Burroughs was a science fiction writer who wouldn’t let fact get in the way of a good story.

I would think that Tarzan falls under the classification of fiction, not fantasy; and not science fiction either—that would be John Carter of Mars.
