Adam: Maybe you should think about another career. Laura: No way. Books are in my blood. I'm passionate about them... And a civilized society needs to be well-read. I'm not going to be responsible for the dumbing down of our culture. Child in background: Mom! Your favorite Spongebob is on!

Yeah, you have to be high to watch it!

I’m with Laura. As long as I can buy a real book, I will. I have about 1200, the first being a series of Hardy Boys. I also read ebooks.
As for Sponge Bob, I prefer Phineas & Ferb. Hey, where’s Perry?

So, is she interested in reading, or in books. The two are not the same. Define your mission.

There’s significant overlap. And while I imagine there are some who enjoy the reading but are indifferent to the delivery system (i.e. ink-on-paper vs pixels on a screen), I think there are few (although not zero) who love book-making as an art form without a deep love of what’s inside them.
If, in “Beauty & the Beast”, the Beast had given Belle a flash drive with the text of thousands of volumes of great literature in digital form rather than presenting her with a room packed floor to ceiling with honest-to-gosh books, the moment wouldn’t have been the same…

Atleast she said “dumbing” and not “dumbening” :-)

By what measure?

I am an assistant manager at a small bookstore and I like Spongebob as well. Life imitating art. We have loyal customers who buy from us first before going to Amazon. There will always be a market for books and bookstores. We’ll just have to wait and see who is left standing.

There are two brick-and-mortar stores on my regular beat. If I’m looking for something specific there’s a good chance that neither will have it, but they can get it to me as quickly as Amazon by ordering. In addition, both are very good for browsing, if I don’t know exactly what I want.
If I need to research a book, author or subject (i.e. to find out what titles or editions are in print), then I’ll use Amazon, and if I find something I like on Amazon I’ll go ahead and order from them.
