Laura: Adam, could you help me bring in the groceries? Adam: Sure, honey. Buy anything exciting? Laura: Celery was on sale. Adam: Wait 'til I tell the kids they'll be ecstatic. Laura: If you're good, I'll tell you about the almonds I bought. Adam: Mmmm. Almonds. Nutty deliciousness. Laura: Almonds aren't actually nuts. They're drupes. Adam: Drupes? They'd have to be nuts to let people call them that.

Ah, but it fills a gap in my knowledge that’s been there since the seventies:

I’ve always known them as nuts. It would be difficult to call them something different now.

Ok, Maybe they need to take the almonds out of the “Mixed Nuts”. Or at least get some truth in labeling and call them “Mixed Nuts, w/ Drupes.”

I know they aren’t nuts because I have a deathly allergy to tree nuts, but I can eat almonds and peanuts without any trouble whatsoever. Peanuts are a legume. Although, pistachios are also drupes, and I am allergic to them as well, didn’t used to be allergic to them, though. Go figure.

And peanuts are legumes… yeah, yeah, but they’re all found in the nut aisle at the store, and they’re all in the same can of “mixed nuts” so I’m gonna call them all nuts regardless.

Botanists classify them as drupes, but they’ve been nuts in common parlance as long as the term “nut” has existed. I think the botanists are all drupes.

I say tomato, you say Tomahto…….I say potato, you say Potahto……
He says, she says. It’s whoever was naming the damn thing at the time……

I think Adam named them drupes, and Eve said, “You’re nuts!”
