My wife refuses to get rid of the landline. She says that in case of an emergency the landline is best. She knows right where to find it, and no dead battery, or weak signal.
Oddball, I know she’s right. Here’s a thought. The ubiquitous cable company always wants us to bundle TV, Internet and phone service with them. So when the cable goes out, how do you contact them? And if the power goes out, most times the telephone company is still working. When was the last time the telephone service went out. When was the last time the cable went out? You really want to trust your 911 call to them? I don’t think so. And finally, the telephone company actually buries their lines—sturdier lines than coax at that—deeper while the cable company usually tries to get away with laying them just under the grass. My next-door-neighbor’s son actually cut their line with his baseball spikes. Security and reliability, NOT!
I cancelled my landline after the phone company said they were going to charge me an extra 10 bucks, because I wasn’t using their long distance plan. (My cell has no extra long distance charge) That’s been about 5 years, and I haven’t missed it. Excuse me now, I have to resume looking for my cell phone.
I don’t like cell phones. I’ve borrowed the use of one a few times in emergencies away from home (not 911-family or service companies) and found them hard to talk and/or hear on and my eyes are senior now, but I don’t want some hybrid with big buttons. Just the land line is fine (for my FAX and updates on my TiVos- just wish it cost less. I call my kids on birthdays sometimes anniversaries and some holidays and anything else I email. I DO call local a bit- to check availability of something at a store, but even the stores are getting better at reading their email. With my light use, the cost does seem excessive.
The Dinette Set comic shrunk once again in size on Monday, October 31 st….. Go back and look at Saturday, October 29 th to see the difference..The size was perfect before and now is too small to reveal the necessary artistic detail ……….The only way we have to get the comic “right sized” is to start a new round of complaints……...Here’s how to do it:.Go to GOCOMICS.com.Click on MY ACOUNTS which is near the upper left corner..Page down one screen and then under” HELP” you will find “ContactUs” Good Luck………………
Ok, I have done that. Actually I am considering dumping the cell and getting a really cheap one. I will tell everyone to call my landline cuz cells are too $$ in this economy…
My wife and I have our own cells, I like keeping the landline because there are some calls I rather not get when I am at work or other activities. If someone is calling about a bill, I have or my morther wants to chat (a long time) I would rather have them talk to me when I am home. Ditto charities. We don’t get telemarketers any more thanks to the legal block thing.
I was resistaint at getting a cell at first (about twelve years ago. At the time the sound quality sucked and I was concerned about the brain cancers we hear about. My wife finally picked one up, Due to the expense back then most people only had one for the whole family. She insisted that I carry it with me went I left the house.A couple days after we got it, she gave me a call. She said, “you see how concvinient this is? Kind of nice that I was able get a hold of you isn’t it?” I said, “yes, but how did you know I was at Krogers?”Anyone know where Sunshine is today? I hope she is okay.
For $10 more a month you can get an extra cell phone, which is cheaper then a monthly landline. We give out the extra cell phone number as our home number and keep it right where we kept our landline so we always know where it is.

Black and white and small…I rather like Burl’s reasoning, strange as it is. Good morning Leaky, and all Crustwoodians.

Hmmm………..I suppose ONE cellphone couldn’t call the OTHER cell phone to see where it’s located.

I used to think the same way but I never lost my phone. It’s been about a year now since I dropped my landline.
