It’s hard on a kid when their picture or example of “true love” is broken. Her parents divorce was a big blow of course. She then met Gene, and in the stages of young Love, the magic and warm fuzzies, she can start to believe perhaps her dad deserves what she herself is experiencing. Perhaps dad has found his one in a million. Ruth is getting on. Then this news, another new girl in her dad’s life. Is there such a thing as love which lasts a lifetime? Tough stuff for a happy comic.

Shortly after Mom left, I came out of my room one day and saw Dad kissing the woman who’s now his wife. I barfed. That pretty much set the tone of our relationship for the next few decades. :-(
